The Catalog is a tool that allows you to manage all of your artifacts. Today, this typically includes both data logs and batch jobs.
It provides capabilities for searching artifacts, understanding where your log capacity is going, organizing your artifacts into collections, and running jobs against those artifacts.

Data Ingest Jobs
When data is ingested into catalog, jobs can be registered to run against the acquired data to produce artifacts analyzing the data results. The resulting artifacts are organized with the data log.
Batch Jobs
Ad-hoc batch jobs can be run against artifacts using the batch_tool command.
